Suriname has a complex and delicate water system.

Being part of the Guyana Shield, which is part of the Amazon, creates an enormous task for the country to manage the water system, on land and in the sea.

Major Problems concerning Water in Suriname

The following problems concerning water need to be taken care of:

  1. Provision of safe drinking water.
  2. Controlling water and water levels for agricultural activity.
  3. Availability of appropriate water for further agricultural, hydroelectric, and industrial developments.
  4. Overdue maintenance on channels, locks, pumps, and pumping stations.
  5. Missing Water Authorities.
  6. Missing centralized digital monitoring of channels, locks, pumps, and stations.
  7. Missing research on causes of water problems.
